Facelift Surgery

Facelift surgery, also known as Rhytidectomy, is a type of cosmetic surgery that aims to provide a more youthful appearance to the face. As we age, skin begins to lose elasticity and facial tissues lose volume. The procedure can reduce the drooping or folds of skin on the cheeks and jawline and other changes in the shape of the face that occurs with age. The loss of youthful contours in the face can be due to thinning of the skin, sun damage, loss of facial fat, smoking, heredity, and stress. Facelift surgery in Mumbai (India) performed by Dr. Parag Telang at Designer Bodyz aims to create a smoother appearance by decreasing the droop of the cheeks and lifting the corners of the mouth. This ultimately reduces visible signs of aging in the face and neck making a person look 5-10 years younger.

Why is facelift done?

Age-associated changes in the face that can be reduced with a facelift include the following:

  • Dry skin is the first outward indication of impending aging. The skin’s natural exfoliation process decreases, causing dead skin cells to accumulate as we age. Sun damage can dehydrate the skin, leaving it rough and dry. Further, it makes the skin stretch, especially on the face when a person makes any expression and ultimately results in sagging skin.
  • As the skin ages, it produces less collagen, the substance responsible for plumping and supporting younger skin. Without collagen, pores become less elastic, dilated, and appear larger. Excessive sun exposure aggravates this even more. The appearance of an uneven and rough skin texture is caused by enlarged pores.
  • As people age, production of other natural compounds like elastin, and hyaluronic acid also declines. This still remains the primary contributing factor to wrinkles and folds, along with other environmental elements including stress, smoking, and other medical disorders.
  • Volume loss is a more advanced aging indication. This volume loss is the result of the thinning of the fatty layer under the skin, muscle atrophy, and a decrease in collagen and elastin in the skin. Loss of volume can make the face look sunken.
  • Sagging skin is another advanced sign of aging. The skin’s underlying structure of the fatty layer decreases as we age. Sagging makes the person look older.

Good candidates for facelift surgery

  • Good candidates are those whose facial contours have become obstructed by the arrival of jowls, loose skin, and wrinkles.
  • If they suffer from a loss of skin flexibility and muscle tone in the face, then the candidate may be a good fit for facelift surgery.

How to prepare for facelift surgery?

  • Medical history and exam: Medical conditions, previous surgeries, previous plastic surgeries, complications from previous surgeries, a history of smoking, and drug or alcohol use are among the questions asked by the facelift surgeon in Mumbai. The cosmetic surgeon in Mumbai will do a physical exam and may request recent records from the plastic surgeon in Mumbai if there are any concerns about the patient’s ability to undergo surgery.
  • Medication review: The names and dosages of all medications the candidates regularly take are provided to the cosmetic surgeon in Mumbai, including prescription drugs, over-the-counter drugs, herbal medications, vitamins, and other dietary supplements.
  • Facial exam: The facelift surgeon in Mumbai will take photos of the candidate’s face from different angles and close-up photos of some features. The plastic surgeon will also examine the bone structure, the shape of the face, fat distribution, and quality of the skin to determine the best options for face-lift surgery.
  • Wash the face and hair: The candidate will likely be asked to wash their hair and face with a germicidal soap in the morning of the surgery.
  • Follow medication directions: The candidate will receive instructions about what medications to stop taking and when to stop them.

The Procedure of Facelift Surgery

Lifting the skin and tightening the underlying muscles and tissues constitutes a face-lift. It is possible to sculpt, remove, or redistribute fat from the face and neck. The facial skin is then re-draped over the newly realigned contours of the face; excess skin is removed, and the incision is fastened or taped closed.

During a face-lift procedure, a flap of skin on each side of the face is pulled back, and tissues below the skin are surgically modified to return the contour of the face to a more youthful shape. The incisions for the procedure depend on the techniques that will be used and the candidate's preferences. The following are the options for the incision:

  • Traditional face-lift incision: A traditional face-lift incision starts at the temples in the hairline, continues down and around the front of the ears, and ends behind the ears in the lower scalp. An incision might be made under the chin to enhance the appearance of the neck.
  • MACS-Lift: This facelift technique is very commonly performed by Dr. Parag Telang for his patients as it has several advantages in comparison to a traditional facelift. MACS-lift stands for Minimal Access Cranial Suspension which involves a limited incision. A limited incision is a shorter incision that begins in the hairline just above the ear, wraps around the front of the ear, but does not extend all the way into the lower scalp. This can further be classified into:
    1. Basic/simple MACS-Lift mainly aims at correction of the jawline, mostly preferred for those who are concerned about the appearance of jowls. Thus giving a sharp, well-defined jawline.
    2. Extended MACS-Lift In addition to basic MACS lift, a suture is placed to the corner of the eyes just below the lower eyelids. It extends further till the malar fat pad zone, so one can observe a lifting effect on the middle face as well.
  • Neck lift incision: The neck lift incision starts in front of the earlobe and continues around the ear into the lower scalp.

Results of a Facelift Surgery

A facelift can give the face and neck a more youthful appearance. Although facelift results are not everlasting. With age, facial skin may begin to sag again. In general, a facelift can be expected to last 10 years.

Benefits of a Facelift Surgery

  • The facelift procedure is the Gold Standard for reversing facial aging. This means - no other procedure can provide results as amazing as surgical facelift and longevity of the results is another factor.
  • The recovery time is shorter with the technique used by Dr. Parag Telang i.e. MACS-Lift.
  • This procedure typically has minimal aftercare.
  • Fewer risks are involved with the facelift procedure.
  • Dynamic wrinkles are mostly seen around the eyes, and luckily they are repairable with the help of facelift surgery.
  • Facial expressions can also lead to forehead wrinkles. The appearance of these wrinkles can make an individual look tired. With the implementation of facelift surgery, this will relax the remaining muscles and, as a result, there will be fewer wrinkles.
