Hairline Advancement Surgery In India

The overall facial appearance matters a lot in one’s personal, professional, and social life. If there is any imperfection, one’s self-esteem and confidence can weigh down. Some people (especially women) have a large forehead or disproportionately high hairline and the rest of the facial features in balance, hence making them self-conscious of their looks. Typically, the hairline begins somewhere between 5 to 6.5 centimeters above the eyebrows and those who have hairlines above this height have an inordinate facial appearance. Mostly, genetics is a causative factor while other possibilities could be hair loss or even a previous surgery.

Most women with high hairlines choose to wear hairstyles that camouflage their high hairlines. Unfortunately, many people with high hairlines are unaware that a procedure exists to advance or lower the height of the hairline for both men and women.

Hairline advancement in India performed at Designer Bodyz is a facial plastic surgery to lower the hairline, reduce the forehead height, and fix the receding normal temple to create a more rounded hairline. It can be referred to as forehead reduction, forehead lowering, hairline correction, hairline lowering and so on. Either this invasive procedure is performed alone or in conjunction with brow contouring surgery or brow lift. If there is a significantly receding hairline or there is pattern baldness, hair transplantation may be necessarily performed either solely or in combination with hairline advancement surgery.

Indications For Hairline Advancement Surgery
  • Receding hairline or frontal/forehead baldness.
  • High hairline and the need to lower it for aesthetic purposes.
  • Forehead wider than the normal and the desire to achieve a more feminine face and a well-defined forehead
  • Uneven distribution of the hair on the frontal part of the head
  • A wish to move the hairline forward if already undergone a brow lift surgery or hair transplant operation.
Ideal candidates For Hairline Advancement Surgery

  • Men or women with large foreheads or naturally high hairlines and have sufficient thick hair.
  • Healthy individuals with enough skin laxity along the scalp and who are unhappy with their facial appearance. The candidates must not have any contraindications to the surgery like cardiovascular disease or scalp conditions.
  • Candidates who are realistic as to what can be achieved by the surgery and are well-informed about the risks and benefits of the operation.

Ideal candidates For Hairline Advancement Surgery
Prerequisites for Hairline Advancement Surgery

To prepare for a hairline advancement procedure, certain preoperative tests may be recommended to the candidate depending upon his/her age or general health status. If the patient is a smoker, he/she must cease smoking a few weeks leading to the surgery and throughout his/her treatment as it may delay the healing process. Consumption of alcoholic beverages must be avoided as much as possible, especially the day before the surgery.

Some medical treatments might be advised to be kept on hold like the intake of certain medications or supplements that increase the chances of bleeding. On the day of the surgery, someone should be arranged to drive the patient back home from the surgical facility and take care at least for the first night afterward. Before starting with the operation, the surgeon may click some photographs of the patient forehead from different angles to compare them with the after results.

The Procedure of Hairline Advancement Surgery

Hairline advancement surgery is performed under general anesthesia or IV sedation to help the patient fall asleep and not feel any pain or discomfort throughout the operation. Local anesthetic injections may be administered to the scalp to keep it numb. The procedure usually lasts for about 2 hours depending upon the complexity of the case.

Once the anesthesia takes its effect, the surgeon makes a long incision across the hairline and into the entire temple region with a scalpel in a very specific and technical way. This incision is made in such a manner that the resulting scar heals well and remains hidden within the hairline. Next, the hair-bearing scalp is loosened or detached from the underlying skull bone and then advanced. At this step, the excess forehead skin is also carefully trimmed away. Special techniques are used to stretch the scalp skin and ensure safety and efficiency throughout the surgery.

An Ultradine or Endotine device may be used to support the scalp as it heals. Over several months, this device gets dissolved under the skin and is fixated on the underlying bone. The surgeon concludes the operation by closing the incision meticulously with several layers of sutures so that the incision heals beautifully. Bandages are applied to cover the incisions to protect the surgical site from infections

To provide the most optimal cosmetic outcome, Dr. Parag Telang, plastic surgeon in India, may recommend hair transplants to further advance the hairline or camouflage any noticeable residual scar tissue. Although that’s rarely needed because he makes sure to place incisions strategically so that there’s no visible scar.

Hairline Advancement Surgery Recovery and Post-Operative Care

Following a hairline advancement surgery, the patient can expect to have short-lived mild soreness. Mild to moderate swelling can be seen in the scalp and forehead and sometimes around the cheek or eye area that usually resolves over a few days or weeks. Around the eyes, the patient might also have mild bruising. There is also some numbness or reduced sensation around and just behind the hairline which resolves within the first few weeks to months. The sutures are removed after a week of the surgery. Final results can be achieved in about 6 weeks or longer.

For recovery, the patient is provided with simple wound care instructions and must take prescribed medications for the first few days. He or she must not indulge in strenuous physical activities for 2 weeks. The patient commits to camouflage his/her incision for up to 3 months as the incision fades. While sleeping, the head must be kept elevated and the operated site must not be disturbed.

Frequently Asked Question

Will I have a visible forehead reduction scar after the surgery?

In most cases, the incision from the forehead reduction procedure can be concealed within the hairline using a trichophytic closure method for a natural-looking result (also if the surgery is performed by an expert). Initially, after surgery and in the early phases of healing, the surgical incision may be visible; however, once the incision is fully healed and the scar tissue has matured, the residual scarring is generally tough to notice. If the patient desires more coverage of the scar, hair transplant surgery can be performed for additional camouflage.

What is the forehead reduction or hairline advancement surgery cost in India?

The cost of the surgery depends on the following factors:

  • Anesthesia cost.
  • Facility and surgeon’s fees.
  • How far the hairline will be advanced.
  • Complexity of the procedure.
  • Any hair transplant costs.
  • Post-operative medication cost.
