Gynecomastia is a benign medical condition wherein the breas-ts of usually adolescent boys or older men unevenly swell and become enlarged more than normal. It is a common male breas-t disorder affecting about 20-25% of males belonging to any age group across the globe. The condition can be noticed differently among patients varying from button-sized growth underneath the nipple to more prominent breas-ts. It can even be felt as a breas-t lump when the breas-ts are pressed at different locations. The lumps may be tender to touch and shift to any place within the breas-ts. Breas-t lumps and enlarged breas-ts could happen in one breas-t or both. Some gynecomastia patients complain of having nipple discharge or itchy breas-t and underarm areas.
Gynaecomastia refers to the excess of glandular tissues in the male breas-ts usually due to fluctuations in the levels of estrogen and testosterone hormone. This is known as true or glandular gynecomastia. Pseudo gynecomastia, aka fatty gynecomastia, is a form of gynaecomastia wherein there is no increase in the glandular tissues of male breas-ts but a collection of excess fat cells in the breas-t usually because of weight gain. Its guaranteed treatment is weight loss.
Gynecomastia is not a serious issue but creates an inferiority complex. They may complain of pain in their breas-ts and feel ashamed of their looks. At Designer Bodyz, Dr. Parag Telang performs the best gynecomastia surgery in Mumbai and helps males get the desired chest shape.
Common possible reasons behind the occurrence of gynecomastia include:
Hormonal imbalance: The hormone responsible for the growth of breas-t tissues is estrogen. As males have more testosterone and less estrogen, their breas-t tissues do not grow much like that of females. However, if there is an imbalance in these two hormones, the man's breas-ts may grow larger, hence resulting in gynecomastia. The hormonal fluctuations can be seen during puberty in teenage boys but this condition can resolve when they get older and have stable hormone levels. Furthermore, newborn boys can temporarily have gynaecomastia as the estrogen can pass to the fetus in the mother’s womb through the placenta. But, this disappears within a few weeks after the birth of the male child.
Overweight or obese: Overweight or obese males are likely to have increased estrogen levels in their body and surplus fat cells in their breas-ts that can enlarge the breas-t tissue.
Old age: Older men tend to have less testosterone and more body fat, thus leading to excess breas-t tissue growth.
Other rare causes: Includes ailments like a kidney failure, thyroid disorders, lung or testicular cancer, tumors of pituitary or adrenal glands, or liver disease; some medications side effects such as anti-ulcer drugs or heart disease medications, injury or trauma, heavy drinking of alcohol, intake of illegal drugs like anabolic steroids or cannabis, infection or lumps in the testicles, and a rare genetic disorder called Klinefelter Syndrome.
Parag Telang, gynecomastia surgeon in India first assesses the symptoms of the patient, conducts a physical examination, and reviews his medical and family history. A routine blood test may be asked to check for hormone levels. To confirm gynaecomastia and rule out breas-t cancer that causes breas-t lumps, the healthcare provider may even order the patient to get:
Gynecomastia condition can usually get better on its own without treatment but it may take about 6 months to about 2-3 years. If any medication is causing a temporary gynecomastia condition, then it's intake must be stopped and if the breas-ts are enlarged because of any underlying health issue, then it must be diagnosed and treated accordingly. In some patients, hormone therapy can work. However, if all the above-mentioned treatment options fail to work or are not the right choice for the patient and enlarged breas-ts are significant and bothersome then gynecomastia or male breas-t reduction surgery in India is advised by Dr. Parag Telang.
