Micropigmentation

In modern times where appearance matters a lot, many people with skin conditions where there is no melanin production or hair loss are demanding the best cosmetic procedure that could help restore their aesthetically appealing look. Micropigmentation in Mumbai offered at Designer Bodyz is one such procedure that has delivered fantastic results in the medical and cosmetic fields.

What is micropigmentation?

Micropigmentation, also referred to as cosmetic tattooing, is a non-surgical procedure often performed by plastic or cosmetic surgeons to improve or replace lost skin coloring. Most often, it is done on the face including the lips, eyebrows, eyelashes, and eyelids as permanent makeup. However, it is even carried out on other body areas (except palm and soles) to camouflage or improve scars, restore natural skin color to the areas that have lost color, and even out the skin colors.

Indications for micropigmentation
People consider micro pigmentation because of the following reasons:

Hair thinning and Balding

These hair-related concerns are caused by various reasons including chemotherapy, genetic disorders, thyroid diseases, etc. With micropigmentation, the scalp color can be darkened to blend in with natural hair color. This way, the bald spots/patches become less noticeable and one can have a fuller-looking head. A complete scalp micro pigmentation can also be done for anyone experiencing total baldness.

The procedure creates an illusion of short shaved hair on the scalp and even achieves the desired hairline. Scalp micro pigmentation is preferred by people who don’t want to have hair transplants or wear a wig. Not only the scalp, but micro pigmentation could also even help the thinned eyebrows, resulting from a disease or chemotherapy, to look thicker.

Unrealistic breast after breast reconstruction surgery

Following breast removal surgery as a treatment of breast cancer and replacement with breast implants, the breasts no longer look realistic. Micropigmentation can help provide a more natural look to the breasts by creating an artificial nipple and areola over the breast skin.

Vitiligo

It is an inherited skin condition wherein the skin gets white spots/patches because of the loss of melanocytes- the melanin pigment-producing cells. These white patches are not much obvious on fair skin complexion, but they are apparent on dark skin. Using micro pigmentation, the vitiligo patches can be darkened to match the surrounding skin. The procedure is particularly beneficial for small white patches on the fingertips and lips.

Traumatic or surgical scars

A trauma or any surgery can cause scarring that further leads to damage of the skin cells and the appearance of lighter patches. Such lighter patches can also appear in skin conditions like contact leukoderma when chemicals come in contact with the patient’s skin. Micropigmentation can be done to camouflage the lighter patches. It can be performed for burn scars, scars of cleft palate and cleft lip, or after the vermilion plasty- a cosmetic surgery done on the lips.

Permanent make-up

Micropigmentation can be used as a permanent eyeliner to achieve a prominent eye appearance or as a permanent lip liner to get fuller lips. It is preferred by anyone who has allergies to traditional, temporary makeup or has medical issues that result in unsteady hands or poor vision and makes the applying of makeup a challenge.

Corneal opacities

Eye trauma can cause scarring and the appearance of opaque patches on the cornea of the eye, thereby resulting in no vision. However, sight can be restored in such patients by cornea grafting. But if grafting is not possible, micro pigmentation can be performed to change the color of the opacity and make eyes aesthetically more acceptable. The procedure cannot improve eyesight.

  • Males or females who seek solutions to some medical conditions like as a follow-up to face reconstruction surgery or want it purely for personal aesthetic reasons.
  • Healthy individuals who have realistic expectations from the results of the procedure.
  • Non-smokers.

Ideal candidates for micro pigmentation
Prerequisites for micropigmentation

Before going ahead with the micro pigmentation procedure, the candidate must be assessed for the bone structure and the skin. Moreover, an allergy test must be carried out to make sure that the candidate will be able to tolerate the pigments that are to be injected into the skin.

What to expect from Micropigmentation

Micropigmentation is typically performed in an office setting of a plastic/cosmetic surgeon. Mostly, the overall procedure lasts from 30 minutes to several hours from preparation to finishing of the procedure. The length of the procedure depends upon the complexity of the procedure.

Prior to micropigmentation, the candidate’s area to be treated is numbed with a topical anesthetic to ensure comfort throughout the procedure. The area to be treated is cleaned properly with antiseptic.

The procedure is performed with the help of a pen-like instrument or a standard tattoo gun which is manually used or electrically driven. It involves injecting the sterile needle filled with a colored pigment, a few millimeters into the skin dermis (middle skin layer) to push out the pigment into the skin. Some of the pigments that can be used include iron oxide, mercuric sulfate, titanium dioxide, and cadmium sulfate. A mixture of colors may be used to obtain the exact shade desired by the candidate. On the safer side, the candidate can also receive organic vegetable-based color pigments.

Following the procedure, the candidate is provided with an antiseptic to keep the treated area clean. In addition, ointment is prescribed for use to keep the area soft and speed up healing. Sometimes, a sterile bandage may be applied to protect the area for several hours. For the first week or so, pigmentation will appear dark and eventually settle once the top skin layer sheds.

Some candidates would need more than one session to achieve their desired result. Maintenance treatments are also needed over the years when the pigments start to fade to maintain the look. Micropigmentation treatment results usually last between 2-5 years after which the pigments start to get reabsorbed by the skin, that is why touch-ups are needed if wish to keep the pigments as defined as it was at first.

Cost of micropigmentation in Mumbai (India) will also vary from patient to patient. To know more about the cost, book a visit now at Designer Bodyz.

Post-treatment instructions from micropigmentation
  • Apply ice packs to quickly relieve swelling.
  • Avoid excessive sunlight exposure on the micro-pigmented area to prevent its quick fading.
  • Gently cleanse the treated area with simple soap after 5-6 hours of the procedure and then apply a very thin coat of prescribed triple antibiotic ointment. Continue this 2-3 times daily for 7-10 days or until all crust/scab has come off.
  • Do not pick, peel, or rub the flaking skin.
  • Avoid exposure of the treated area to excess humidity or moisture such as saunas, swimming, steam rooms, facials, whirlpools, and steamy showers.
  • Do not use Retin-A, glycolic acids, moisturizers, exfoliants, and anti-aging products at all times on micro-pigmented sites as these can cause pigments to fade and lighten prematurely.

Frequently Asked Question

What are the possible side effects of micro pigmentation?

The potential side effects that may occur during or after micropigmentation includes

  • Local swelling, pain, and bruising.
  • Local infection due to lack of sterile precautions.
  • Exacerbation of skin conditions like psoriasis or even vitiligo (if unstable) or reactivation of herpes infection after the procedure.
  • Formation of nodules or scar tissue due to wounding of the skin and reaction of the skin to the tattoo ink as an allergen.
  • Allergic reaction to dyes or colors used in the procedure.
  • Swelling or burning in the treated area who has undergone MRI imaging.
  • Eye complications- such as loss of eyelashes, crusting, severe eyelid surgery, and ectropion.

What are the benefits of undergoing micro pigmentation?

  • Simple and cheap cosmetic procedure than other alternatives.
  • Immediate results, however, the exact color match may take a couple of days to develop.
  • Long-lasting effects, but touch-up sessions may be required if there is fading.

Is micro pigmentation permanent?

Yes. One can think of micro pigmentation results as permanent as it is very difficult to be removed. The inks used can never be washed off from the skin but the color may fade away eventually over the years because of constant skin cell turnover. Micropigmentation can be understood as a lengthy, painful, expensive, and multiple sessions approach, and all of the ink may not be removed in the process.
