Orbital Contouring Surgery In India

According to human anatomy, the forehead is the part of the face with its top characterized by the hairline, bottom marked by the supraorbital ridge (the bony skull feature lying above the eyes), and its sides having a temporal ridge (a bony portion connecting the supraorbital ridge to the coronal suture line and beyond).

The forehead appearance varies among different genders and it aesthetically relates to other facial features. Typically, a male forehead has protruding brow ridges (eyebrows in line with the supraorbital ridges), a relatively flat upper forehead, and frontal bossing whereas females have a smooth, gently curved forehead with no frontal bossing. The eyebrows of the females are arched and raised above the supraorbital margin or bony rim of the eye socket.

Orbital contouring is one of the facial feminization surgeries that can truly transform the appearance of the upper third of the face and make it look more feminine. It is performed by a cross-trained surgeon (i.e. skilled in both plastic and craniofacial surgery) to bring out the eyes by removal of prominent orbital rim bones. This gender affirmation surgery makes the patient feel no more conscious of their facial appearance and own gender.

Forehead Contouring Surgery in India is performed at Designer Bodyz by Dr. Parag Telang, an expert facial feminization surgeon in Mumbai.

Ideal Candidates for Orbital Contouring Surgery

  • Adults who have realistic expectations and positive outlook from the surgery.
Prerequisites for Orbital Contouring Surgery

  • Do not smoke for at least 4 weeks before the surgery as it prevents proper blood circulation, poses a risk of infection, and makes the effect of anesthesia much riskier, hence delaying recovery.
  • Keep the body hydrated with lots of water so that anesthesia effects can be handled.
  • Fuel the body with a healthy, balanced diet.
  • Avoid medications such as NSAIDs or vitamin/herbal supplements that can lead to unnecessary bleeding, swelling, or bruising.
  • Have a restful sleep the night before the surgery to stay healthy, relaxed, and strong.
  • Schedule the surgery by taking some days off work.
  • Arrange for some entertaining activities at home and pre-prepare the meal to get some help post-surgery. Take out some time to arrange for the supplies that may be required at home following the surgery.

Prerequisites for Orbital Contouring Surgery
What happens during the initial consultation for Orbital Contouring Surgery?

At the first meeting with the surgeon, the patients are asked about their goals and concerns associated with Forehead Feminization. The surgeon checks for the suitability of the patients for the surgery by reviewing their complete medical history and carrying out a thorough forehead examination.

Next, the surgery is planned by the surgeon, and its procedure, risk, and benefits are discussed in detail with the candidate. Some medical investigations such as blood routine tests, ECG, and others may be required to be undergone by the patient as advised by the surgeon.

The Procedure of Orbital Contouring

Orbital contouring surgery is performed under general anesthesia so that the patient lies unconscious and feels no pain or discomfort throughout the operation.

The surgeon accesses the orbital rim bone by making an incision from temple to temple in front of the hairline. This cut fades away after some time post-surgery. Through the incision, the lateral orbital rim subunits and outer third of the supraorbital ridge are shaved to increase the dimensions (the perimeter) of the anterior orbital rim. The orbital bones (around the eyes) are even shaped to alter the shape of the eyebrow. During the bone dissection, the supraorbital nerves are closely identified and protected.

If the patient desires for contouring of only the superior central and temporal orbital rims, then incision through the upper eyelid crease is a safe and minimally-invasive approach for visualization and sculpting of those bony parts. Once the forehead contouring is done, the surgeon sutures the incision sites and applies bandages or surgical dressings.
